In 1933 the U.S Justice Department wanted a federal prison that could house the most dangerous and difficult prisoners that other prison could not house. They wanted to make Alcatraz much more secure.The maximum security facility officially opened on July 1 ,1934 . The first warden of Alcatraz James A. Johnston ordered one guard for each three prisoners and each prisoner had his own cell.
Daily life for prisoners at Alcatraz was hard and harsh prisoners were given four rights and it included medical attention , food, shelter and clothing . Family visits had to be earned by hard work .The punishments for prisoners for bad behavior were hard .including hard labor , wearing a two pound ball and chain .
Alcatraz held 270 convicts that represent 1 less percent of the federal prisoner population .This prisoners were Americas most dangerous prisoners.
Most prisoners were very smart. There were a total of 14 escape attempts by 30 prisoners . Most were caught others were shot and others were killed by the waters of San Francisco Bay.
