Welcome to Alcatraz now I will tell you how the island was discovered.
In 1775 a Spanish explorer named Juan Manuel de Ayala discovered a small island near San Francisco Bay and named it La Isla de los Alcatraces. Once the name was translated it was turned to Island of the pelicans. The smell island had swift currents, minimal vegetation and arid ground.
The U.S . Army knew the strategic value for The rock as a military fortification 72 years later in 1847. Soon, later Topographical engineers began making geological surveys and in 1853 the U.S army started constructing a military fort at the island. In 1853 the U. S. Army started making topographical surveys and in 1853 the U.S Army started making a fortress in the island.
Did you know that Alcatraz island had the first American lighthouse, wich was located in the west coast of the island. Or that Alcatraz Island was also used as a defense fort during the civil war, Then once the fort became useless the Us army turned Alcatraz into a federal prison. Then there was an American Inkian protest movement
